The key take-aways:
- Ask experienced parents for advice
Ask other parents for useful tips and product recommendations so you can make smart and practical choices.
- Only buy what you really need
A good layette consists mainly of practical, comfortable and safe items, not necessarily a lot of items.
- Choose comfort over style
Choose soft materials and easy-to-use clothing and furniture that are practical to use.
Creating your babies’ layette without stress
Creating a layette is a fun, but sometimes overwhelming task. Of course you don't want to miss anything, but at the same time you want to avoid buying too many things that you won't end up using. Fortunately, you don't need as much as you might think. With a practical and well-organised checklist, you can shop in a targeted way and make sure you get exactly the things you and your child really need.
The basics: sleeping and care
A safe place for your child to sleep is essential. Choose a sturdy cot or crib with a suitable mattress. You will need at least two fitted sheets, as well as some flat sheets and blankets or a suitable sleeping bag. You will also need a changing table for changing and caring for your baby. Get a changing mat with at least two washable covers, nappies (cloth or disposable), baby wipes and a mild nappy ointment. Don't forget to buy plenty of muslins, as they are versatile for care, changing and drying after a bath.
Clothing: what and how much?
Baby clothes are irresistibly cute, but be careful not to buy too much. Your baby will grow quickly and will often only wear clothes for a short time. Start with about six to eight size 50/56 onesies, some trousers and jumpers, socks and a hat. Choose soft, comfortable materials such as cotton. Make sure that your baby's clothes are easy to open for quick nappy changes. A cardigan and coat are useful, depending on the season in which your child is born. Above all, remember that comfort and convenience are more important than the latest trends.
Bathing and care products
Your baby will not need many care products. A baby bath or Tummy Tub is sufficient to bathe your child safely and comfortably. Use a mild, natural baby soap or washing gel without perfume or chemicals. Also provide soft bath towels and washcloths. In addition, a soft hairbrush and possibly baby nail scissors are practical to have in the house. Don't buy too many products at once; it is better to choose quality over quantity and add to your collection as soon as you realise you are missing something.
Nutrition: breast or bottle feeding
If you are breastfeeding, you will not need many extra items. However, comfortable nursing bras and nursing pads are practical. If you are bottle-feeding, you will need several bottles (about four to six) and teats, as well as a bottle cleaner and a handy steriliser. A bottle warmer can also be practical. Also make sure you have formula milk in the house, but don't buy large quantities right away because your baby may sometimes react sensitively to certain brands.
On the road: safe and practical
A good pram is essential, as is a safe car seat suitable from birth. Choose a model that meets the latest safety requirements and is easy to attach. A changing bag and a sling or ergonomic baby carrier are also ideal for keeping your child close, especially during short trips or at home if you want to keep your hands free. Make sure you also have a nice, light blanket that you can easily take with you on the go.
What do you not necessarily need?
Some items seem useful but turn out to be less useful in practice. For example, a changing table in the living room or an extensive collection of baby toys. Many toys only become interesting later on. Special baby detergents or baby water are usually not necessary either; ordinary mild detergents and boiled tap water are just as good. Are you unsure about purchasing certain items? Then ask other parents in your area for advice and make conscious choices, so that you only buy things that you will actually use.
Make use of experiences and tips
Feel free to ask family and friends about their experiences; they know exactly what is useful and what you can safely skip. A practical layette mainly contains items that make life with your baby easier and that offer comfort and safety. By making smart and conscious choices, you can avoid stress and fully enjoy preparing for the arrival of your little one.
